2024 Texas Senior Chess Championship

Players age 50 and over compete in five rounds (G/60;d5) on March 16-17, 2024.
Entry Fee: $65 if received by February 29, 2024, otherwise $80.
US Chess and TCA Memberships Required.
Rounds: Saturday 10:00 am, 2:00 pm, 6:00 pm; Sunday 9:00 am, 1:00 pm.
One 1/2 point bye (rounds 1-4 only) allowed if requested before round one.

Eligibility

  • All players must have been born on or before July 29, 1974.
  • Players are not required to be Texas residents, but only Texas residents are eligible to be named "State Senior Champion" or represent Texas in the National Tournament of Senior State Champions.
  • Texas residents must be members of the Texas Chess Association.
  • Non-Texas residents must be a member of any US Chess Federation State affiliate organization.

Tournament Format

  • Five rounds at G/60;d5
  • US Chess Federation rules will be followed.
  • Round Times
    • Saturday 10:00 am
    • Saturday 2:00 pm
    • Saturday 6:00 pm
    • Sunday 9:00 am
    • Sunday 1:00 pm
    • Tiebreak Round (if needed) Sunday ASAP
  • If two players have perfect scores after five rounds, a sixth round G/30;d5 game between the two will be played immediately to determine first and second place.
  • If there are more than 32 entries, accelerated pairings will be used at the discretion of the tournament director.

State Senior Champion

The Texas resident with the highest score after round five will be named, "Texas Senior Champion". If two or more Texas residents are tied with the highest score after round five, they will all be named co-champions.

2023 Irwin: Seniors (50+) Participants

National Tournament of Senior State Champions

The Texas Senior Champion will be eligible to represent Texas in the 7th Annual John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions and will receive a stipend of $500 to help cover expenses of attendance at the event. If there are co-champions, the player with the highest place finish as described below will represent Texas in the national tournament and receive the $500 stipend.

Place Prizes

Plaques will be awarded to top finishers. If after five rounds, two players have perfect scores, a sixth round will be played between the two players to determine first and second place. Otherwise, all places will be determined by score and US Chess Federation standard tie-breaks. Standard tie-breaks are 1) Modified Median, 2) Solkoff, 3) Cumulative, 4) Cumulative of Opposition.

Awards

  • Texas State Champion - The Texas player (or players) with the top score after five rounds will be named "Texas Senior Champion".
  • National Senior Tournament - The highest placing Texas resident will represent Texas in the 7th Annual John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions.
  • Place Prizes - The top five places will receive plaques.
  • Upset Prize - There will be a cash prize for the player achieving the highest upset win.
